What is a Windows vServer and when do I need one?
A Windows vServer is a virtual server with Windows Server as its operating system, which you operate via Remote Desktop like a normal Windows computer. You need one if your software requires Windows, for example ASP.NET applications, MSSQL databases or industry-specific programs. For classic PHP-based websites, a Linux vServer is the more suitable and leaner choice.
Which applications require a Windows vServer?
Typical cases are ASP.NET and .NET applications, MSSQL databases, Active Directory services, terminal server scenarios as well as ERP, inventory and accounting software that only exists for Windows. Automations with Windows tools or Office applications on the server also fall into this category.
Can I host ASP.NET applications on a Windows vServer?
Yes, that is one of the main reasons for choosing Windows. Via Internet Information Server, IIS for short, you set up websites and application pools and choose the appropriate .NET framework. In combination with MSSQL you then have the complete Microsoft stack on your server.
What is the difference between Windows Server 2019 and 2022?
Windows Server 2022 mainly brings security improvements such as secured-core features and TLS 1.3 as standard, plus improvements for containers and cloud connectivity. 2019 is still stable and widely supported, but its support ends earlier. For new projects the newer version makes sense, provided your application supports it.
Is a Windows Server licence included at world4you?
With a rented Windows vServer the licence for the operating system is part of the product, so you do not have to buy it separately from Microsoft. Licences for additional software, for example MSSQL in higher editions or Office products, are not covered by it. Support will tell you quickly and reliably what exactly is included.
How do I connect to my Windows vServer via Remote Desktop?
You need the IP address of your server as well as a user name and password, and then you start the remote desktop connection. On Windows it is pre-installed, and for macOS, iOS and Android there is the Microsoft Remote Desktop app. Security tip: use a strong password, restrict access by firewall to known IP addresses and rename the default user.
How do I manage a Windows vServer without IT knowledge?
A lot runs through the graphical interface: Server Manager, IIS Manager and Control Panel are laid out to be self-explanatory. For websites and mail you additionally use a control panel such as Plesk, which also runs on Windows. It does not work entirely without administration, though, as updates, backups and security remain your job. If you do not want that, you are better served with web hosting.
