Domains

World4You offers a variety of more than 500 domains for sale, in addition to the popular .at, .com and .eu domains. In this section, you will find answers to questions concerning your domain.

  • A domain is your name (URL) on the Internet, with which your website and your e-mail addresses can be reached. A domain is unique and basically - in compliance with certain rules - freely selectable. These rules are set by NIC (Network Information Center) for each top-level domain. In addition, a distinction is made in domains between top-level domains, second-level domains and third-level domains.

A top-level domain (TLD) is the first level of a domain. This is defined by the section after the last dot. Examples are .at, .de or .com. On the basis of the top-level domain, it can be determined which registry is responsible for the respective domain ending. For example, nic.at is responsible for .at domains, EURID is responsible for .eu. The registry manages all domain entries that include, among other things, information about the domain owner, which provider the domain was obtained from or what the server is.

A second-level domain (SLD) is the second level of a domain, often simply referred to as a domain. An example of this is the world4you in world4you.com. At this level a query is individualized and it is possible to find the database entry of the TLD containing owner data and server entries. The SLD is also protected by trademark and naming rights.

The third-level domain is also called a subdomain. Examples are webmail or my in webmail.world4you.com or my.world4you.com. The domain owner or administrator can define the subdomain freely. Subdomains are often used to create a better structure for a website. In principle, it is possible to choose a different DNS resolution or destination IP address for the subdomain than for the TLD. As a result, as shown in the example, by calling webmail.world4you.com the webmail portal can be opened directly.

Technically, www is also a subdomain. It is possible to refer www.world4you.com and world4you.com to different websites. However, this is unusual. In general, it is expected that both versions lead to the same website.

  • When choosing the right domain name, you have to consider the following: "Is the domain still free?" and "Is the domain right for me?". Whether the domain is still free, you can check at any time with the help of our domain check.

If you want to register your domain as a private individual and do not have a specific topic, your own name might work well as a domain. This gives you the advantage of securing yourself an email address in the form of your own name, for example hello@johndoe.at or john@doe.com. In this case, your website could be reached under johndoe.at or doe.com.

If you follow a certain activity or have a company name, a combination of job descriptions, names and place names is recommended, for example handyman-doe.com or electrician-wels.at.

Did you know? In addition to an .at or .com domain, many companies acquire additional domain extensions and also typos of their own domain.

  • Country domains such as .at, .de, .ch and classic top-level domains such as .com, .net or .org are known, popular and accepted worldwide.

In addition, there is a large selection of hundreds of new domain endings. As a result, the domain check finds relevant and suitable results for every interest group and industry. But also common TLDs such as .online, .work or .website offer a perfect alternative to the classic domains. The World4You domain check groups the new domain endings into their own categories. That way, you get a comfortable overview and find your desired name in a heartbeat.

  • Registration of your domain is done in real time. As a rule, your domain is active within a short time (maximum of a few hours) worldwide. Our system then sends you the registration confirmation via email.

A delay is due to reload times of the root name servers of the contracting entities. The technical accessibility of .at domains depends on the reload times of the NIC.AT name servers. These usually take place several times a day.

  • No. Once you have ordered your domain, we forward your order and transfer your invoice amount to the registry, which carries out the process of assigning the domain to you for a full year. For this reason, unfortunately, it is not possible to rename a domain retrospectively.

If you discover that you made a mistake while registering, you have the option to delete your current domain and register a new one.

If the domain you ordered, but don’t want, is your main domain, you have the option to re-register a domain and then exchange the two domains. The exact process is explained here.

  • Yes. That is possible. To do this, an ownership change is required.

This change can be initiated directly at my.world4you.com under Domains > Domain Overview in the Whois settings of the corresponding domain. Subsequently, an email with a confirmation link will be sent to your email address currently registered in Whois. After your confirmation, the data will be changed immediately.

If your domain is not supported, the change of ownership can also be done via the form located on the website under Support > Forms under the owner change. The old and the new owner must be mentioned, both owners must sign this form. You can then submit the scanned form via email or fax or send it to us via mail.

  • You can get the Authorisation Code for your domain at my.world4you.com under Domains > Domain overview by clicking on the information symbol (i) next to your domain name.

After calling up the information symbol (i), you will see a 16-digit code consisting of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. The auth code may e.g. look like this: o#w9!2@LoWqHA*Ac (This is just a sample code, your personal code is only accessible via the above mentioned path.)

    Auth-Code-en

If your auth code is not displayed correctly, you can contact our support at any time under Help / Support > Contact Helpdesk.

If you transfer a domain to World4You, you must request the auth code from your old provider/registrar.

  • In order to transfer a domain from another provider to World4You, make sure you are registered with your previous provider as domain owner and that you have an Auth code (Authorization code) so that the transfer can be requested.

This Auth code is provided by the previous provider on request or through its control panel. Please note that all providers may only submit the auth code to the valid and official domain owner.

If you are not registered as the owner of the domain, we kindly ask you to initiate this change at your previous provider. Otherwise, the different entries may lead to problems and delays in the transfer process. All providers are obligated to give you the auth code due to ICANN requirements.

To start the transfer process, first order the desired domain.

If you are a new customer, you can start the process at world4you.com. Enter the desired domain in the domain check. After verification, the domain should be displayed as Assigned - Transfer. Click this button and confirm that you are the owner of the domain and that are authorised to carry out the transfer. Then complete the rest of the ordering process to get access to your customer account.

If you are already a World4You customer, you can initiate the transfer directly at my.world4you.com under Add domains. Enter the domain to be transferred and click on Check availability. The domain will then appear in a list of other domain suggestions, with the status being not available. Click Transfer, then confirm the following message if you own the domain or are authorised to perform the transfer. You can now choose to order only the domain or combine it with a hosting package. Complete the order, the domain will then be added to your account and prepared for a transfer.

If you purchased your domain through a sales platform such as Sedo, via a hosting provider, or privately by another person, you will need to complete the Owner Change form offered by World4You for contractual reasons. You can find it on our Website under Support > Forms. Upon completion, send it directly via e-mail, post or fax to us.

You can retrieve the current status of the domain or package at my.world4you.com under Webspace > Package status, as well as enter the auth code and thus initiate the transfer with us. If the ability to enter the auth code does not appear, send a request with the required auth code to domainsupport@world4you.com, so that our support team can arrange the transfer for you.

Some domain extensions are subject to special requirements, which must be met first. In this case, you will receive an automated e-mail with the request to submit the relevant data.

  • In order to transfer an existing domain to World4You, you have to specify that domain during your domain check on world4you.com. Once you complete the order process, we can collect your data and you will immediately have access to the World4You services.

At the same time the domain transfer is started. You usually have to confirm this via email. In addition, our domain team will contact you. Some domains require an Auth Code for the transfer which you receive from your former provider. If you have any questions about the transfer, our support team is of course always available to assist you during this process.

  • The transfer to World4You is free.

With some domain endings, you may receive the annual invoice immediately after transfer. This is the invoice for the following year. Upon payment, you have settled all invoices for your existing contract as well as the following year.

An example: If you transfer your .com domain to us, but still have 5 months left with your old provider, you will receive an annual invoice immediately. After that, you have already paid the domain invoice for the next (5 + 12 =) 17 months.

The reason for this is simple: To be able to transfer a domain, we as a provider are obliged to report any changes to the registry. As soon as you transfer your domain to us, the registry will immediately charge us for the following year.

The domain server will then be made available to you. After completion, please contact our support so your domain can be switched to external.

Please do not submit an auth code for this procedure, so your domain may be left external.

  • A subdomain is subordinate to a main domain. You can recognise a subdomain by the fact that it is always in front of the domain name (separated by a dot). Here's an example:
    Domain
    www.beispielwebsite.at
    Subdomains (subordinate)
    shop.beispielwebsite.at
    subdomain.beispielwebsite.at
    w4y.beispielwebsite.at

There are two ways to create a subdomain.

If you would like to refer the subdomain to your webspace, you can create the subdomain at my.world4you.com under Webspace > Subdomains with the corresponding destination. This is where you enter the name and the destination of the subdomain. The directory is automatically created on your webspace. The contents of this directory can be called after a short time by entering the new subdomain in the browser window (examples: shop.beispielwebsite.at or subdomain.beispielwebsite.at).

If you want to link your subdomain externally, you can do this in DNS management at my.world4you.com under Domains > DNS. Here you can you set up your desired subdomain and refer to external content with the A or CNAME records (example: w4y.beispielwebsite.at).

  • Normally yes. The registry for .de domains (Denic) specifies that the Admin-C of a .de domain requires a German address. World4You operates a trust service that meets these requirements. That way, you can register your desired domain at World4You with a non-German address. The cost of this trust service is € 0.75 per month.

The Admin-C is the administrative contact of a domain. Admin-C is registered in the Whois database with their name and address, next to the owner.

  • The main domain normally points to the main directory. You can, however, forward your domain to a subdirectory via the .htaccess file. In order to do that, create a file with the name .htaccess and insert the following content:
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteRule ^$ /subfolder [L]
To copy, press Ctrl + C
    Copied to clipboard
This will redirect the domain to the subdirectory.
Since this process interferes with the system structure, we recommend only experienced users to forward domains to subfolders. Of course, if you are not sure, you can contact our knowledgeable support team. Go to my.world4you.com under Help / Support > Contact Helpdesk and submit a request to our support.

  • There are several ways to redirect from a webspace to another website or URL. Please replace the mentioned domains in the following instructions with your own.

    1. Redirect via .htaccess (for all Domainserver packages except Basic)
To do this, create a file named .htaccess with an editor and upload it to your webspace with the following content:
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} (www\.)?YourDomain.at
    RewriteRule (.*) http://www.YourTargetDomain.at/$1 [R=301,L]
To copy, press Ctrl + C
    Copied to clipboard
    1. Forwarding via PHP (for all Domainserver packages except Basic)
To do this, use an editor to create a PHP file with the following content:
    <?php header("location: http://www.YourTargetDomain.at"); ?>
To copy, press Ctrl + C
    Copied to clipboard
    1. Forwarding with JavaScript (also possible for Domainserver Basic)
A (delayed) forwarding can be realised via Javascript. The following source code comes in the <head> tag:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    <!--
    setTimeout("self.location.href='http://www.YourTargetDomain.at'",2000);
    //-->
    </script>
To copy, press Ctrl + C
    Copied to clipboard
The number 2000 stands for the delay in milliseconds.

    1. Redirect via HTML Meta Refresh
Create an HTML file with the following content. An example script might look something like this:
    <meta data-attributeorder="http-equiv,content" http-equiv="refresh" content="0; URL=http://www.YourTargetDomain.at'"><!-- ... other information in the file header ... --><!-- Your website content -->
To copy, press Ctrl + C
    Copied to clipboard
Content here means the time after which you want to forward. 0 = immediately, eg. 1 = one second and so on. URL is the forwarding destination.

  • The IPS Tag or Tag Holder is the domain identifier of a .uk domain. This label indicates which provider or registrar manages the domain.

In order to transfer a .uk domain, the IPS tag or tag holder must be changed to the new provider/registrar. Before that, the transfer process must already have been initiated so that the tag change can be made afterwards. If the new provider/registrar does not have a transfer request in the system, the tag change will fail. The tag change itself is done by the old provider/registrar.

If you would like to transfer an existing .uk domain to World4You, start the transfer request via the domain check on our Homepage. The domain status is displayed as Assigned - Transfer, select the domain to initiate the order. Once you have completed the order, please contact our domain support at domainsupport@world4you.com so that we can send you the current IPS Tag or Tag Holder.

  • Punycode is a standardised encoding method for representing Unicode strings in ASCII-compatible characters.

This means that special characters, such as ä, ö, or ü, can be represented and processed internationally with the 128 characters of the ASCII ("American Standard Code for Information Interchange"). These characters include the Latin alphabet in uppercase and lowercase letters, the digits 0-9, as well as some special characters, for example !"#$%&'()*+.

Within your browser, a domain called beispielhömepäge.at will be displayed normally. In the background and not visible to your users, the domain name is converted into Punycode and written as follows: xn--beispielhmepge-hib8z.at

  • You can connect your multidomain to a subfolder of the main webspace or to the root directory.

If an installation for your DomainOnly has been made in a subfolder, the corresponding path can be specified during the multidomain assignment (www.beispielwebsite.at/beispielordner). If you want to point to the root directory, leave the slash symbol "/".

During multidomain assignment, all created mailboxes of the main domain receive an alias for the newly assigned domains.

For example: hello@beispielwebsite.at is the mailbox of your domain beispielwebsite.at. At the same time you have activated beispielhomepage.at. This means that you can be reached via hello@beispielwebsite.at and hello@beispielhomepage.at. However, the administration and sending of emails is only possible from hello@beispielwebsite.at.

If you need a complete mailbox to send emails from your new domain (in this case, beispielhomepage.at), you will need to purchase a Domainserver package. A Domainserver package already includes its own email server.

WhoIs
  • Whois entries are the data behind the domain name. When you register a domain with World4You, you will automatically be defined as domain holder and Admin-C (administrative contact) in the Whois data.

Previously, Whois data published the name and address of the domain name owner. Due to the GDPR, no personal data of private individuals will be published any longer.

  • Yes. This is possible for .com, .org, .net, .info, .biz, .co, .name and a number of other domains.

Whois is a protocol that can be used to query information from an Internet domain and its owner from a database system. Such an entry looks like this:

    w4y-at-faq-1117-whois

With privacy protection, you can hide the Whois owner data of your domain. As a result, they no longer appear when querying your domain. Privacy protection helps keeping you anonymous, spam is minimised, and your data is protected from misuse.

Privacy protection can be activated at my.world4you.com under Domains > Domain Overview in the tab Privacy Protection for supported domains. Alternatively, you can deactivate the display of the telephone number, fax number and email address when using .at, .co.at and or.at domains. These changes can also be made in the domain overview under the Whois link of the respective domain.

DNS
  • The Domain Name System (DNS) is used to translate name server requests. The DNS works similar to a phone book.

Each website is located on a server and can be addressed via IP address. However, when a user wants to load a website, they enter a memorable domain, such as examplewebsite.at into their browser. The client or browser then sends a request to the Internet, which is processed by the name server. Subsequently, the DNS translates the domain into the associated IP address and thus forwards the user to the correct server and website.

  • The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical database distributed across thousands of servers worldwide, managing the namespace of the Internet. DNS allows the browser to read the IP address of your website and is therefore essential for your website to be accessible.

If your IP address changes, you can customise the DNS records of your domain(s) directly at my.world4you.com under Domains > DNS.

Please change the entries only if you are sure that the change is necessary. Even small typing mistakes can make your homepage unavailable or prevent the email traffic to your domain.

  • Yes. The necessary DNS/name servers are included with every domain registration. The standard name servers are as follows:

    ns1.world4you.at
    ns2.world4you.at

The systems are located in the high-availability World4You data centres and are also completely physically separate.

  • If you change your name servers, we process the update in real time and forward it to the registry. Depending on the domain extension (TLD), it may take up to a few hours for the name servers to be active.

  • Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) are several standards that extend the Domain Name System (DNS) with authentication mechanisms.

The DNS converts the domain entered by the user into the associated server IP address. This creates a communication between client and name server. However, this communication can be interrupted or influenced by attackers and malicious software. As a result, the transformation may be corrupted and the user may be redirected to completely unexpected and potentially malicious content after entering your domain.

The authenticity and integrity of the data can be ensured by DNSSEC since the PC or client can verify that the zone data obtained is identical to that on the server of the creator.

DNSSEC relies on an encryption process in which the parties involved each use a public and private key: The private key is provided with DNS information and a digital signature. The public key ensures that clients can verify this signature, thus confirming the authenticity of the source.

  • The DNS Certification Authority Authorization (CAA) is a security measure to prevent misuse of certificate issuance. The domain owner can thereby determine which certification authorities (CAs) are authorised to issue certificates for the domain. For CAA records, the value is composed of three individual values.

Service Resource Records (SRV) can be used to specify which IP-based services are offered in a domain. Some Internet protocols, such as the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), but also applications such as Office 365, often require SRV support from network elements. For SRV records, the value is composed of three individual values, the entire entry must be structured in the form <weight> <port> <server>.

DNS-based Authentication of Named Entities (DANE) is a network protocol used to secure traffic and ensures that used certificates can not be exchanged unnoticed. Transport Layer Security Authentication (TLSA) determines which SSL/TLS certificates are allowed by clients with DANE support. For TLSA records, the value is composed of four individual values.
